1910 T211 Red Sun Tobacco SGC-Graded Near-Complete Set (63/75)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $16,800
Presented is an extraordinary near-complete set of 1910 T211 Red Sun Tobacco cards. Missing only twelve cards for completion (seven of which are offered in a separate lot in this auction due to their extreme high grade). Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second-largest assembly of T211 Red Sun cards ever offered at public auction! (The 2010 REA auction featured an unprecedented group of seventy-four different cards, missing only one for a complete set, from the estate of legendary pioneer collector Paul Pollard; that collection of seventy-four T211 Red Sun cards realized a stunning $88,125.)
Large collections or near-sets of this rare issue are virtually unheard of. This is an incredible offering! The T211 set is comprised of seventy-five different players from the Southern Association. T211 Red Sun are one of the rarest and (in large part because of their rarity) most overlooked of all tobacco-card issues. They share the same designs as the eighth series of the 1910 T210 Old Mill set, which are universally recognized as among the rarest cards in the T210 set.
SGC Grading Composite: VG 40 (25 cards): Allen, Babb, Bayliss, Bronkie, Case, Chappelle, DeMontreville, Dick, Dunn, Fisher, Gygli, Hohnhorst, Jordan, Lynch, Molesworth, Moran, Nolley, Paige, Pepe, Rhoton, Rogers, Sid Smith, Steele, Vinson, and Wilder. GOOD+ 35 (2 cards): Cross and Kerwin. GOOD 30 (20 cards): Berger, Bernhard, Bitroff, Breitenstein, Cafalu, Davis, Erloff, Greminger, Griffin, Huelsman, Kelly, Keupper, LaFitte, McCreery, Perdue, Robertson, Rohe, Siegle, Wagner, and Welf. FAIR 20 (7 cards): Daly, Foster, Hess, Hickman, Lindsay, Miller, and Swacina. POOR 10 (3 cards): Bay, Cohen, and Gribbon. Authentic (6 cards): Bartley, Hanks, Manush, Seabough, Smith, and Walker. Several of these cards appear at a glance to be in better condition than suggested by their technically accurate assigned grades.
T211 Red Sun Tobacco cards are among a small selection of elite sets that have long captured the imagination of many of the most legendary collectors, from the earliest days of serious collecting, perhaps more so in years past than even in recent times. The reason many great early collectors prized these cards so highly is twofold: 1) These cards could not (and cannot) simply be purchased in set form. They are rare! They have to be collected. They are a challenge. 2) Ultimately, cards are about the players that are featured. Many of the players in T211 are featured in few or no other sets. These characteristics make the green-bordered T211 Red Sun set especially significant to the game of baseball and to the world of baseball cards, and especially appealing to the most sophisticated collectors. T211 Red Sun cards also have a very distinctive design with striking player poses, and a very attractive and unique advertising-back design. This is an incredible opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of this rare and desirable prewar issue in outstanding consistent grade. Total: 63 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+.
