1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco "Series 8" Southern Assn. Partial Set (50/114)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $5,700

Presented are fifty different 1910 T210 Old Mill "Series 8" cards featuring Southern Assn. players. This "Series 8" group is part of an extraordinary near-complete T210 Old Mill set (Series 1 through 8) assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced collector and offered by series in this auction. "Series 8" cards are particularly rare (Series 7 and Series 8 cards are by far the rarest of all T210 Old Mill). The "Series 8" cards are presented in two lots of fifty cards each, combining to represent 100 of 114 cards in the series. Joe Jackson is the key to this series (his inclusion in "Series 8" no doubt contributes to his great rarity) and a beautiful example from this same collection is presented in the Featured section of this auction. This is a tremendous collecting opportunity as substantial groups of "Series 8" cards are very rarely offered. While every card in this lot is much rarer than the T206 Wagner, we cannot help but note that two players in this collection of "Series 8" cards are named Wagner.

This partial "Series 8" set consists of the following:
LaFitte, Larsen, Lindsay, Lynch, Manush, Marcan, Maxwell, McBride, McCreery, McLaurin, McTigue, Miller (Chattanooga), Miller (Montgomery), Molesworth, Moran, Newton, Nolley, Osteen, Ower, Paige, Pepe, Perdue, Peters, Phillips, Pratt, Rementer, Rhodes, Rhoton, Robertson, Rogers, Rohe, Schopp, Seabough, Seitz, Siegle, Smith, Sid Smith, Steele, Swacina, Sweeney, Thomas (fielding), Vinson, Wagner (Birmingham), Wagner (Mobile), Walker, Wanner, Welf, Whiteman, Wilder, and Wiseman. Condition is 18% Vg-Ex, 58% Gd to Vg, and 24% lesser (including a few trimmed).

The T210 Old Mill Tobacco card set has always been extremely highly regarded by advanced collectors due to its featuring so many players that appear in no other sets, as well as its very distinctive design, its scarcity compared to most other tobacco-card sets of the era, and its extremely striking photos that are unique to the set. The T210 Old Mill set is also well known by all collectors due to its inclusion of Joe Jackson (Series 8) and Casey Stengel (Series 6), which are today regarded as two of the most famous and valuable of all baseball cards (each of which appears in the Featured section of this auction and originate from the same near-complete T210 set as this lot). It is virtually impossible to complete the entire set and only a few complete sets (or even sets minus a few cards) have ever been assembled. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial partial set of one of the key series, featuring Southern Assn. players of the Southern League (interesting note: some of these players will be familiar for their appearance in T206), painstakingly assembled by an extremely dedicated advanced collector. Total: 50 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,700
