1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco "Series 7" E. Carolina League Partial Set (30/67)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,000
Partial set of thirty different 1910 T210 Old Mill "Series 7" cards featuring E. Carolina League players. The T210 set is actually comprised of eight different series, each a set unto itself, and each representing a different minor league. The "Series 7" cards feature players from the E. Carolina League. This "Series 7" group is part of an extraordinary near-complete T210 Old Mill set (Series 1 through 8) assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced collector and offered by series in this auction. "Series 7" cards are particularly rare (Series 7 and Series 8 cards are by far the rarest of all T210 Old Mill). The "Series 7" cards are presented in two lots of thirty cards each.
This partial "Series 7" set consists of the following: Armstrong, Beatty, Biel, Bonner, Brandt, Brown, Cantwell, Cooney, Cooper, Cowell, Cregan, Crockett, Dailey, Dobbs, Dussault, Dwyer, Evans, Forgue, Fulton, Galvin, Gastmeyer (batting), Gastmeyer (fielding), Gates, Griffin, Gunderson, Ham, Handiboe, Hart, Hartley, and Hobbs. Condition is 20% Vg-Ex, 47% Vg, and 33% lesser (mostly Gd, with a couple trimmed). One of the trimmed cards appears to be hand-cut and missing the top layer of gloss, a noted phenomenon among T210s.
The T210 Old Mill Tobacco card set has always been extremely highly regarded by advanced collectors because it features so many players that appear in no other sets, it has a very distinctive design, it is scarce compared to most other tobacco-card sets of the era, and it features striking photos that are unique to the set. The T210 Old Mill set is also well known by all collectors due to its inclusion of Joe Jackson (Series 8) and Casey Stengel (Series 6), which are today regarded as two of the most famous and valuable of all baseball cards (each of which appears in the Featured section of this auction and originate from the same near-complete T210 set as this lot). It is virtually impossible to complete the entire set, and only a few complete sets (or even sets minus a few cards) have ever been assembled. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a partial set of one of the key series, featuring E. Carolina League players of the Southern League, which has been painstakingly assembled by an extremely dedicated advanced collector. Total: 30 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,000
