1887 N693 Kalamazoo Bats Philadelphia BBC Team Card with Harry Wright

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $10,200

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Presented is an extremely rare and crisp 1887 N693 Kalamazoo Bats team card of the Philadelphia Nationals, featuring the "Grand Old Man" of the game, the legendary Harry Wright, surrounded by twelve players. Over the years, we have found the Philadelphia Nationals team (then known as the Philadelphia Quakers) to be one of the rarest of the six Kalamazoo Bats team cards. This is only the second example of this card that we have offered in the last forty years (this exact card last appeared as lot #34 in REA's 2010 auction, where it realized $10,575). With reference to Kalamazoo Bats as an issue, it is also arguably the most significant of all the teams in the set, as Philadelphia players provide the foundation of the individual player N690 Kalamazoo Bats set; and of the Philadelphia individual player Kalamazoo Bats cards, Harry Wright is the key Hall of Famer. The contrast on this example is superb. This is an extremely attractive card, with extraordinary detail, from the elaborate stadium-fence background, to the buttons on the uniforms, down to even the architectural detail on the legs of the chairs on which the players are sitting. The card has two tiny creases in the extreme upper left and right corners, a small surface chip in the upper right corner, a barely detectable surface scratch above the right shoulder of the second player from the left in the second row, and with lightly rounded corners. The blank reverse has a few light stains. This is a exceptionally attractive Kalamazoo Bats team-card example and one of the nineteenth century's most striking and desirable team cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
