1909-1911 T206 White Border Del Howard Ghost Image - Interesting Printing Anomaly!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,280

Fascinating printing anomaly of Del Howard (Chicago Cubs) from the classic T206 White Border series. This card possesses a unique, boldly defined partial ghost image of Howard from the top of his cap to the center of his jersey on the reverse of the card. It has the appearance that the black print neatly transferred onto the reverse during the printing process at the factory, though we suspect that the true explanation has something to do with excess ink on the printing press remaining on the press during test printing runs. However this occurred, it has clearly created a “shadow" or "ghost image” of Howard on the reverse that is identical to portions of the pose on the front of the card. It is possible that the reverse image was somehow accidentally added by the printing press, somehow related to early press preparation. Perhaps this unusual card will provide insight into the T206 printing process. Encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (the card appears to be slightly trimmed on at least one edge) and designated "Ghost Image," the card is bright and crisp in overall Fair condition, with a horizontal crease near the bottom and a few unobtrusive areas of paper loss at the bottom of the Piedmont reverse, which do not affect the ghost image. The T206 set, affectionately known as "The Monster," is the most popular of all 1910-era sets and is still yielding new and exciting discoveries more than a century after its production. As collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities and unusual cards associated with this landmark set. This is an unusual printing anomaly that will be very much appreciated by collectors of the various nuances found within this iconic set. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,280
