1909-1911 T206 White Border Christy Mathewson Dark Cap SGC NM 84 - Polar Bear Back - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,100

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Stunning ultra high-grade example of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson (dark cap pose) from the T206 White Borders series, the most popular set of the era. In addition to being in extremely high grade, the offered example is all the more noteworthy as the reverse has an advertisement for Polar Bear Cigarettes. Polar Bear is a desirable back, certainly not in the same league as Drum or Uzit, but unusual and seen far less often than the standard Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising backs. This is the ONLY example of the dark-cap variation featuring a Polar Bear back graded at this level with none higher. Only eight examples (featuring any advertising reverse) grade higher out of an incredible 1,485 cards evaluated by SGC to date. The offered card is flawlessly crisp and clean, front and back, with four sharp corners, snow-white borders, and outstanding centering (very slightly to the top). The Polar Bear reverse is boldly printed. An exceptionally strong Near Mint gem of this Hall of Fame pitcher that would enhance or upgrade virtually any high-grade T206 set or collection. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $5,100
