1909-1911 T206 White Border Sid Smith - Extremely Rare Brown Old Mill Back!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $24,000

Presented is an example of one of the rarest of all T206 advertising reverses: the Brown Old Mill. Brown Old Mill backs are one of the key rarities to any complete T206 advertising-back collection, far rarer even than Uzit or Drum backs. According to T206Resource.com, Brown Old Mill ranks as the second rarest advertising reverse (behind only the legendary Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back) out of thirty-nine different backs available within the T206 set. They are virtually nonexistent, and only a handful of examples are known. Brown Old Mill backs are only found on Southern Leaguers, and all examples are hand-cut and only qualify for "Authentic" designations from professional grading companies (the offered card is encapsulated by SGC). The obverse of this card features Sid Smith (Atlanta). The card presents as Vg-Ex, with a crisp image, bold colors, light wear at the corners, and centering slightly to the right. The reverse features a boldly printed Brown Old Mill advertisement set against a striking off-white background. It is perfectly centered, with an extremely well defined brown color. A small stain over the word "Series" is the only flaw of note. This is an extraordinary card that is worthy of the most advanced T206 or rare sample-card collection. There has always been great interest in rare T206 advertising backs, and in recent years we have seen more collectors assembling T206 back collections than ever before. The Brown Old Mill back is one of the extreme rarities that keeps just about every collection from completion. The fact that the advertising reverse is so crisp and clean, and obviously brown in color (as opposed to black) makes this a particularly exceptional example to represent this almost-never-seen T206 advertising back, missing from virtually every T206 advertising-back collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $24,000
