1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Red Background - Rare Lenox Back!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $27,000

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Extremely rare and desirable example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb (portrait, red background pose) featuring a black Lenox advertising reverse. The T206 portrait of Ty Cobb set against a brilliant red background is considered by many collectors to be his single most classic card. It is one of the most recognizable and popular of all vintage baseball cards. This example is distinguished for its Lenox back, which ranks as the eighth most difficult back (out of thirty-nine) in the entire T206 set. All Lenox backs are great rarities, but this card is all the more interesting because it features Ty Cobb and is the premier T206 card with a Lenox back. This is the only pose of Cobb in the T206 set which was printed with a Lenox advertising back. It is also interesting to note while the red background portrait card of Ty Cobb with an advertisement for Ty Cobb Tobacco (of which approximately a dozen are known) is universally recognized as one of the most significant and valuable of all tobacco-card rarities, the Lenox back T206 Ty Cobb is actually even slightly rarer, with less than ten examples graded by PSA and SGC combined. The offered card is exceptionally attractive, with a well-centered and flawless image of Cobb set against a brilliant red background. There is light, even wear to the four corners (slightly more in the upper left), and a light hairline crease extending approximately one inch from the top border down to the left of Cobb's head. The important Lenox advertising reverse is clean and boldly printed. This is an incredible rarity featuring Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the classic T206 set, which would be an extremely significant highlight in even the most advanced T206, rare-back, or Ty Cobb collection. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $27,000
