1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Red Background

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,560

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC (submitted by REA). Stunning, yet modestly graded example of Ty Cobb (red background) from the legendary T206 White Border set. The T206 portrait of Ty Cobb set against a brilliant red background is considered by many collectors to be his single most classic card. It is one of the most recognizable and popular of all vintage baseball cards. It is hard to look at this card and not be convinced that it should be graded higher! It is bright, crisp, and clean, with four strong corners, outstanding color, perfect registration, and an extremely bold red background. The Piedmont reverse is clean and bold, with only light traces of album removal in the upper left corner. An extremely faint horizontal crease is visible under close inspection in the lower quarter of the card. It is very hard to see and is not at all distracting because it is overshadowed by all the great qualities this card has to offer. This example illustrates that even today a collector, with patience, can still have the opportunity to obtain some of the most noteworthy cards in outstanding condition on a relatively modest budget. This is a gorgeous example of one of Cobb's most striking cards, and with a much stronger appearance than suggested by its technically accurate assigned grade. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
