1909-1911 T206 White Border Christy Mathewson Dark Cap PSA EX-MT 6 - Polar Bear Back - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,600
Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. This is the only example, with none higher, graded at this level with a Polar Bear reverse according to the PSA Population Report (although there are several dozen cards graded at this level or higher designated as "Unknown Back," and these cards could include at least one Polar Bear). This is a very attractive high-grade example of one of the three classic poses of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson from the T206 White Borders series, the most popular set of the era. In addition to its high grade, the offered example is even more noteworthy as the reverse has an advertisement for Polar Bear Tobacco. The exceptionally high grade of this Polar Bear card is of special note. T206 cards issued with Polar Bear tobacco were not well protected from the accompanying product. This is why T206 cards with Polar Bear advertising reverses almost always have various condition problems, including tobacco staining. The offered card is flawlessly crisp and clean, front and back, with four strong corners, bold colors, and a perfect image. The Polar Bear reverse is boldly printed and centered slightly to the top. An exceptionally strong example of this Hall of Fame pitcher that would be a worthy addition to any T206 set or Hall of Fame collection. The SMR value in the assigned grade is $2,350. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,600
