1909-1911 T206 White Border Near-Complete Set (519 of 524)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $33,000
Near-complete 1909-1911 T206 White Border set (519 of 524), missing only the "Big 4" and the St. Louis variation of O'Hara for completion. There is little need for a formal introduction to the T206 White Borders set, the single most important and highly collected issue among all tobacco and all vintage cards. Presented is an extremely consistent near-complete set of 519 cards. This set was assembled by our consignor, an advanced collector who built all the great sets dating from 1909 to the 1970s many years ago (almost all from the 1950s, when organized collecting was in its infancy, through the early conventions of the 1970s). Condition of this near-set is 35% Vg (including 4% Vg-Ex), 38% Gd (slightly more than one-third of which have a small pencil notation on the reverse but would otherwise grade Vg or better), and 27% lesser (including a few trimmed). Any T206 set, of course, naturally has a tremendous "break value" and most quality sets are broken up and sold individually. This T206 near-complete set is highlighted by seventy-four Hall of Famers, including all four Ty Cobb cards, three Christy Mathewsons, two Walter Johnsons, three Cy Youngs, as well as many rarities, including the rare St. Louis variation of Demmitt, Elberfeld/port. (Wash.), and, of course, the forty-eight scarce Southern League series cards. We have selected thirteen cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC.
The key cards grade as follows: Baker (Pr, American Beauty 350), Beckley (Fr, Sovereign 350), Bender/no trees (Vg), Bender/trees (Fr, Cycle 350), Bender/port. (Fr), Bresnahan/port. Vintage cards in general, and T206s in particular, have a special charm in circulated condition, and also represent a tremendous value compared to higher-grade examples. A complete set in the offered grade is a particularly hot commodity, always extremely desirable to collectors, offering the most classic 1910-era baseball-card set without requiring the hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars that a higher-grade set would cost. Even in low to mid grade, a T206 set runs into real money, a function of there being so many cards in the set and so many highlights (HOFers, etc.), but is of interest to and within the reach of so many more collectors than a high-grade set. When it comes time to sell, a T206 set in any grade can be sold as a unit, or easily be broken up, providing a "built-in insurance policy." T206s are never going out of style and it is always a privilege to offer a complete set or a very substantial start towards one. This is a very attractive and desirable near-complete set of the 1910 era's most classic tobacco-card issue, representing one of the most outstanding values of all vintage cards. The equivalent SMR value for just the thirteen graded cards (factoring in the six half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 506 ungraded cards!) is $4,790. Total: 519 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++.SOLD FOR $33,000
