1911 T205 Gold Border Near-Complete Master Set (219/221): #4 SGC Set Registry!

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $16,800

Presented is an exceptionally attractive complete T205 Gold Borders set of 208 cards plus eleven variations for a total of 219 different cards representing a near-complete master set (missing only two cards for completion: Mathewson - Cycle, which is offered individually in this auction, and Hoblitzell - No Stats). All cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC, and this near-complete master set ranks fourth on the SGC Registry with overall average grade of 34.91. The T205 Gold Borders set is universally recognized as one of the most classic of all tobacco-card issues and includes all the great stars of the era and many rarities that make this set one of the most challenging and difficult-to-complete of all tobacco-card sets. The offered set spans several grades, consisting of two EX 60s, five VG/EX+ 55s, twenty VG/EX 50s, two VG+ 45s, seventy-four VG 40s, eleven GOOD+ 35s, seventy-two GOOD 30s, thirty-two FAIR 20s, and one POOR 10. Overall, this is an exceptionally attractive and consistent T205 set, which is rarely offered in complete-set form, especially with almost all of the variations required for a master set. This complete set has been very carefully assembled with eye-appeal in mind by a dedicated collector over a period of several years and represents a tremendous collecting achievement.

Most of the cards have Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Hassan, or Honest Long Cut backs, but also included are cards with American Beauty, Cycle, Polar Bear, and Sovereign backs. This is an outstanding offering in a very consistent and desirable condition, and is far more complete than usually seen (it is missing only two of the rare and extremely expensive variations). Of course, it does include all of the Hall of Famers, minor leaguers, and many rarities, which make the assembly of the T205 Gold Border set especially challenging. The equivalent SMR value for the individual cards (factoring in the fifty half-graded cards at the lower whole grade level) is $17,810. This is a beautiful set! Total: 219 cards (complete basic set plus eleven variations). Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+.
