1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folder PSA-Graded Partial Set (79/132)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $13,200
The beautiful lithography, the great number of stars represented, and the unique design of T202 Hassan Triple Folders combine to make it one of the most highly regarded of all baseball-card sets of the era. Offered is a beautiful partial set consisting of seventy-nine different cards (out of 132 in a complete set), highlighted by ten cards featuring Hall of Famers, including Walter Johnson. These cards are part of a near-complete set consigned to this auction, which has been broken down into a number of different lots by condition. Each card is professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. PSA is notoriously hard on T202s, due to the "spider creases" which naturally occur along the folds of the side panels, as well as roller marks that are so common to the issue. These natural manufacturing flaws sometimes result in particularly harsh grading. The offered partial set is in superb condition for T202s, comprised of two NM 7s (both qualified), twenty-seven EX-MT 6s, three EX+ 5.5s, thirty-three EX 5s, two VG-EX+ 4.5s, eight VG-EX 4s, one VG+ 3.5, and three VG 3s. This is one of the finest collections of T202s we have ever seen, with many of cards presenting even nicer than suggested by their already impressive grades.
T202s are unnumbered. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. PSA Grading Composite: NM 7 (2 cards): #15 Bresnahan/Harmon (HOF, OC) and 66 (OC). EX-MT 6 (27 cards): #5, 7, 12, 33, 35, 42, 48, 52, 55, 57, 58, 69, 74, 80, 91, 96, 97, 98, 100, 103, 104 Chase/Wolter, 111, 113, 114, 121, 123, and 128. EX+ 5.5 (3 cards): #67, 78, and 81. EX 5 (33 cards): #6, 11, 13, 17, 18, 19, 24, 28, 32, 37, 41, 43 (SGC EX 60), 50, 51, 53, 54, 62, 63 (SGC EX 60), 71, 73, 75, 86, 87 (SGC EX 60), 89, 92, 94 Lord/Tannehill (many collectors believe this card features Joe Jackson in the center image), 95, 102, 105 Clarke/Miller (HOF, SGC EX 60), 112, 119, 122, and 124. VG-EX+ 4.5 (2 cards): #1 LaPorte/Wallace (HOF) and 77. VG-EX 4 (8 cards): #16 Chance/Foxen (HOF), 23, 29, 39 Baker/Collins (HOF), 49, 72 Lennox/Tinker (HOF), 88 Johnson/Knight (HOF), and 132 Dahlen/Wheat (HOF). VG+ 3.5 (1 card): #40 Murphy/Collins (HOF). VG 3 (3 cards): #10, 26 Chase/Wolter, and 83 Marquard/Meyers (HOF).
