1913 T200 Fatima Team Complete Set (16 cards): #1 SGC Set Registry!
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $10,800
Fatima Cigarettes is responsible for one of the most unusual and distinctive of all tobacco-card issues: the T200 Fatima team card set. Presented is a complete set of sixteen cards, all graded and encapsulated by SGC. This set is rated as the number-one set on the SGC Set Registry with an overall grade average of 57.75. T200 Fatima team cards are rarely offered in complete-set form, let alone in such high grade! (Note: a complete T200 set in any grade is much rarer than collectors realize, in part because several teams are particularly rare, which make complete sets very difficult to assemble.) T200 Fatimas are extremely condition-sensitive. Every card is a condition rarity. Do not be fooled by what (for less condition-sensitive tobacco-card issues) might appear to be mid-grade cards as assigned by SGC! For Fatima team cards, these are extremely strong cards and extremely strong grades! The thin stock and fragile real-photo surface of T200 Fatimas makes them very susceptible to light creasing. A tiny little surface crease, which is almost unavoidable for this issue, automatically knocks the grade down to Vg-Ex, even if the card otherwise looks Near Mint. This is a gorgeous set!
Many collectors consider T200 (and the similarly designed T222 individual-player cards) the single most condition-sensitive sets in all of vintage-card collecting. This is a beautiful and extremely attractive set. As is often the case with T200 Fatimas, several of these cards look far better than their assigned grades. SGC Condition Report: One NM 84: Chicago Americans (1 of 1, highest graded, and one of only five cards of any team to ever be graded NM or higher by SGC). Two EX/NM 80: Cincinnati Nationals and Washington Americans (1 of 1, highest graded). Four EX 60: Chicago Nationals (highest graded), New York Americans (highest graded), New York Nationals with Christy Mathewson and Jim Thorpe (highest graded), and Philadelphia Nationals. Eight VG/EX 50: Boston Americans, Boston Nationals (highest graded), Brooklyn Nationals, Cleveland Americans with Joe Jackson, Detroit Americans with Ty Cobb, Philadelphia Americans, Pittsburgh Nationals with Honus Wagner, and St. Louis Nationals. One VG 40: St. Louis Americans.
T200 Fatimas is a set which is not practical to collect in Mint condition. In fact, there has never been a T200 Fatima graded Mint by SGC and 95% of all graded examples have been graded Vg-Ex or lower, with almost all others Ex (fewer than one-percent in higher grades, including just one Nr/Mt-Mt). The fact that almost half of the offered set grades Excellent or better is extremely impressive! The T200 set is just beginning to be appreciated for its combination of rarity, unusual design, photographic quality, and the exceptional value it represents compared to other far more common tobacco-card issues of the era. This is a tremendous opportunity to acquire one of the finest T200 sets ever assembled, worthy of even the most advanced prewar-card collection! The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $13,265. Total: 16 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000+. SOLD FOR $10,800
