1909 E92 Dockman & Sons Christy Mathewson PSA EX 5
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,200
Graded EX 5 by PSA. Beautiful high-grade example of New York Giants Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from the E92 Dockman & Sons set. This rare caramel issue from 1909 shares designs with several other closely related candy issues (Croft's Candy, Nadja Caramels, etc.) from the same era. Widely recognized as one of Mathewson's most popular and beautifully designed cards, the offered example has a flawless image set against a vibrant colored background. Bold colors, light, even wear to the four corners, and outstanding centering. The back is also bright and clean, with bold text. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. This is a strong Excellent example of the legendary Christy Mathewson from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,200
