1911 E94 George Close Candy SGC-Graded Collection (4) - All Purple Backgrounds!
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,920
Presented is a collection of four different cards from the E94 George Close Candy set, each graded by SGC (except one PSA) and featuring a striking purple background. E94 is one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. Although cards from this set are found with a number of different background colors, collectors have come to appreciate purple backgrounds not only for their aesthetics but for their rarity. This collection consists of the following: Jimmy Austin (PSA VG 3, New York Highlanders), Josh Devore (SGC FAIR 20, New York Giants), Harry Lord (SGC VG 40, Chicago White Sox), and Terry Turner (SGC VG 40, Cleveland Naps). The offered cards all have crisp images, deep, rich color, even wear to the corners, and outstanding centering. The reverses, which feature a checklist for the set, are entirely clean, with the exception of Devore, which displays adhesive residue on what is otherwise a VG card. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is an outstanding group of four E94 examples, all featuring purple backgrounds. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+.
