1911 E94 George Close Candy Eddie Grant - Purple Background!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extremely attractive example of Eddie Grant (Cincinnati Reds) from the E94 George Close Candy set featuring a striking purple background. E94 is one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. Although cards from this set are found with a number of different background colors, collectors have come to appreciate purple backgrounds not only for their aesthetics but for their rarity. The offered card is extremely presentable with a crisp image, deep, rich color, even wear to the corners, and centering to the left. The reverse is clean and features a checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is an outstanding sample card from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $540
