1911 E94 George Close Candy SGC-Graded Near-Complete Set (21/30)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $13,200
Extremely rare and exceptional near-complete set of E94 George Close Candy consisting of twenty-one of the thirty cards in the set, highlighted by Hall of Famers John McGraw and Sam Crawford, as well as future "Black Sox" star Ed Cicotte. Missing Chance, Cobb, Evers, Jennings, Lajoie, Magee, Speaker, Wagner, and Young for completion (all of which are offered individually in this auction). The 30-card E94 set was issued in 1911 by the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Advanced collectors of "E" cards will immediately recognize the caramel-card set designated as "E94" as a thorn in their sides. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult, and we have only ever offered one complete set. The set is comprised almost exclusively of Hall of Famers and stars.
SGC Grading Composite: Two EX/NM 80: Leach and Turner. One EX+ 70: Bescher. One EX 60: Davis. Nine VG/EX 50: Austin, Bates, Devore, Doolan, Dougherty, Grant, Lobert (Nagy Collection) Lord, and Moore. Eight VG 40: Byrne, Cicotte, Crawford (HOF), Devlin, Kleinow, Lake, McGraw (HOF), and Murray.
This a particularly attractive and high-grade near-complete set of E94s. Each card is bright and clean, with bold colors. The lesser-graded cards are downgraded almost exclusively due to even, natural wear at the corners. Only two cards graded VG 40 are downgraded as a result of small creases. Caramel cards, which of course were issued with candy, one card per pack, tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco-card counterparts. The equivalent SMR value for this near-complete set (factoring in the one half-grade at the lower whole-grade level) is $12,600. Total: 21 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $13,200
