1911 E94 George Close Candy Cy Young - Purple Background (Nagy Collection)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $9,600
Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. E94 candy card featuring the legendary Cy Young in a pitching pose set against a deep purple background (one of the seven different background color variations of the set). This is a particularly fascinating card of Young both because he is identified as “Old” Cy Young along the bottom border of the card, and the image of Young used on this card pictures him in a Boston Red Sox uniform even though he is identified with Cleveland on the card. Very attractive card with bright, crisp colors, outstanding centering, and light touches of wear at the corners. A small chip in the left border contributes to the modest grade despite an otherwise Ex+ appearance. The back features the checklist for the set. This particular example has been pedigreed by SGC as originating from the collection of legendary hobby pioneer Frank Nagy. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, though they share many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. This is an extremely attractive example of one of Cy Young's most classic cards from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $9,600
