1911 E94 George Close Candy SGC-Graded Hall of Fame Collection (7)

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $2,700

Extremely attractive collection of seven Hall of Famers from the E94 George Close Candy set, one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. The offered collection of seven represent a near-complete subset of the ten Hall of Famers featured in the E94 set (the Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Cy Young appear elsewhere in this auction). Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC. This collection consists of the following: Frank Chance (POOR 10, Chicago Cubs), Sam Crawford (FAIR 20, Detroit Tigers), Johnny Evers (VG 40, Chicago Cubs), Hugh Jennings (POOR 10, Detroit Tigers), Nap Lajoie (POOR 10, Cleveland Naps), John McGraw (VG 40, New York Giants), and Tris Speaker (FAIR 20, Boston Red Sox). Although the cards in this collection are in technically modest grade, several appear nicer than suggested by the accurate assigned grade, having been downgraded due to stampings on the reverse. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. A very presentable and highly desirable collection of seven different Hall of Famers from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. These cards would be an outstanding additions to any set in progress or “E” card, Hall of Famer, or classic prewar-card collection. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades (factoring in the two half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $2,705. Total: 7 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,700
