1961 Nu-Card "Baseball Scoops" Advertising Display Featuring #447 Babe Ruth Plus PSA NM-MT 8 of Issued Card

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $480

Extremely rare 1961 Nu-Card "Baseball Scoops" advertising display featuring Babe Ruth. This store display cardboard sign, which measures approximately 14.25 x 18 inches, features a black-and-white rendition of card #447 "Babe Ruth Hits 60th Home Run." The display has survived in overall Excellent condition with the exception of two small nail holes placed inconspicuously in the black background near the top and bottom edges, undoubtedly the result of having been used for its intended purpose. A small crease radiates from the hole near the bottom border, and the blank reverse displays a small strip of paper loss in the same area. We have only ever seen two other "Baseball Scoops" advertising displays at public auction in the last twenty years: Walter Johnson and Al Kaline (each of which had similar damage, although this Ruth is the finest condition example of the three). While we have not seen two examples of any single player, it is likely that others do exist. Interesting note: This advertising display was notable enough to grace the cover of the April 1983 Trader Speaks hobby publication. We do not know if this is the very same example which appeared on the Trader Speaks cover. The detail of the published cover does not allow us to say with certainty, but based on the extreme rarity of the piece, it is a real possibility. We have provided an image of the Trader Speaks cover online for reference, but the actual issue does not accompany the lot. Ideally, however, the display is accompanied by an example of the final-issue card of Babe Ruth that is featured on the sign, graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. This is an outstanding pairing worthy of any advanced Babe Ruth or advertising collection. Total 2 items (store display and card).
