1935 R90 Gum, Inc. "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" Collection (4)

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $360

Collection of four cards from the 1935 R90 "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" set, one of the most elusive and highly prized of all 1930s card issues. Few card sets from any era, sport or nonsport, have the mystique of this set. Collectors searching for "Mickey Mouse with the Movie Star" cards have always found that their incredible rarity makes them virtually impossible to collect. Even a sample is tough to find. The rarity of the series is all the more striking when one considers that this set was issued by Gum, Inc. (as opposed to an obscure manufacturer), and that the series was really a high-number extension to Gum, Inc.'s extremely popular 96-card R89 Mickey Mouse Bubble Gum card set. In fact, the "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" cards are numbered 97 through 120. They are, however, catalogued as a separate entity from the 1-96 low numbers, both because they are so distinctive, with each card featuring Mickey Mouse with a famous star, and because they are so much rarer than those cards in the earlier series. In addition, the "Mickey Mouse and the Movie Stars" series was issued separately by Gum, Inc. In the set, Mickey is featured with all of the greatest real-life stars of the day. The four cards offered in this collection are #103, 109, 114, and 115. Each presents as Vg-Ex to Ex when viewed from the front but displays writing on the reverse in the spot designated for writing the name of the star pictured with Mickey and therefore all would grade modestly. Two cards (#114 and 115) also measure slightly small compared to the other two cards in the lot. Despite these technical flaws, this remains an extremely attractive collection of sample cards from one of nonsport card collecting's most legendary rare issues. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $100. Estmate (open). SOLD FOR $360
