1888 N217 Kinney Bros. "Butterflies" and N228 "Novelties" Near-Complete Sets (117/125 cards)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $300

Presented are two very attractive near-complete sets of colorful and very striking nineteenth-century tobacco cards from the N217 "Butterflies" and N228 "Novelties" sets issued by Kinney Bros. in 1888. 1) N217-2 "Butterflies": Gold background series. Near-complete set consisting of forty-three cards (out of fifty). Missing #3, 7, 20, 22, 36, 39, and 50, as listed in the World Tobacco Index. Condition is very consistent Vg-Ex to Ex, with thirteen lesser, all but two of which present as Vg-Ex to Ex, but are downgraded due to small areas of writing on the reverse. 2) N228-3/5 "Novelties": Extremely scarce near-complete set of seventy-four cards, missing only "girl in round blue-edged plaque" for completion. Sixty-eight cards are die-cuts from Series 3, while six cards are from Series 5, which were issued as regular-size tobacco cards. Four of the six Series 5 cards have been trimmed down to resemble die-cut cards. 85% of the cards present as Vg to Ex from the front and 15% are lesser. Almost all of the cards would technically grade lesser, however, due to flaws on the reverse, including paper loss, album residue, and small pencil marks. This is an exceptional pair of near-complete sets of these two classic nineteenth-century nonsport-card issues. Total: 2 sets, 117 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $300
