1888 to 1891 Nonsport Tobacco-Card Complete Set Collection (5 sets, 225 cards)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $960

Presented is an outstanding collection of 225 cards representing five complete sets of nonsport tobacco cards issued between 1888 and 1891. This is an extremely attractive collection of cards (ideally, presented in complete sets!) from classic nineteenth century tobacco issues. All are quality pre-1900 tobacco card issues and included are several sets that are particularly scarce and desirable. Each set features beautiful colors and clean images. 1) 1888 N18 Allen & Ginter “Parasol Drill” (50 cards): 34% Vg-Ex to Ex, 32% Vg, and 34% Fr to Gd. 2) 1889 N71 W. Duke & Sons “Actors and Actresses Series 2” (50 cards): 48% Vg-Ex to Ex and 52% Fr to Gd. 3) 1889 N73 W. Duke & Sons “Fancy Dress Ball Costumes” (50 cards): 70% Vg-Ex to Ex and 30% Fr to Gd. 4) 1889 N182 W. S. Kimball & Co. “Ballet Queens” (50 cards): 56% Vg-Ex to Ex, 18% Vg, and 26% lesser. 5) 1891 N131 W. Duke & Sons “Stars of the Stage (3rd Series)” (25 cards): 60% Vg to Vg-Ex and 40% lesser (including one with added color). Almost all of the lesser-graded cards in this collection present much better than their assigned grades but have been downgraded due to small flaws on the reverse, including paper loss, album residue, and writing, all commonly encountered on nineteenth century cards. This is a very attractive and substantial collection representing five complete sets of classic nineteenth century tobacco card issues. Total: 5 sets, 225 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
