1887 to 1890 Nonsport Tobacco-Card Complete Set Collection (9 sets, 423 cards)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,300

Presented is an extremely substantial collection of 423 cards representing nine complete sets of nonsport tobacco cards issued between 1887 and 1890. This is an extremely attractive collection of cards (ideally, presented in complete sets!) from classic nineteenth century tobacco issues. All are quality pre-1900 tobacco card issues and included are several sets that are particularly scarce and desirable. Each set features beautiful colors and clean images. 1) 1887 N9 Allen & Ginter “Flags of All Nations” First Series (50 cards): 68% Vg-Ex to Ex and 32% Fr to Vg. 2) 1887 N17 Allen & Ginter “Naval Flags” (50 cards): 46% Vg-Ex to Ex and 54% Gd to Vg (including a few trimmed or miscut). 3) 1888 N44 Allen & Ginter “The World’s Decorations” (50 cards): 66% Vg-Ex to Ex and 34% Vg (including a few lesser due to paper loss or album residue on the reverse). 4) 1888 N181 W. S. Kimball & Co. “Arms of Dominos” (48 cards): Grades Ex to Ex-Mt overall. 5) 1888 N217 Kinney Bros. “Butterflies of the World” (50 cards): 76% Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt and 24% Fr to Vg. All gold background. 6) 1889 N14 Allen & Ginter “General Government and State Capitol Buildings of the United States” (50 cards): 80% Vg-Ex to Ex and 20% Fr to Vg. 7) 1889 N225 Kinney Bros. “National Dances” (50 cards): 92% Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt and 8% Gd to Vg. 8) 1890 N10 Allen & Ginter “Flags of All Nations” Second Series (50 cards): 68% Vg-Ex to Ex and 32% Fr to Vg. 9) 1890 N229 Kinney Bros. “Famous Running Horses” (25 cards): 32% Vg-Ex to Ex, 16% Vg, and 52% Fr (due to writing on the reverse, otherwise Vg to Ex). Many of the lesser-graded cards in this collection present much better than their assigned grades but have been downgraded due to issues on the reverse, including paper loss, album residue, and writing, all commonly encountered on nineteenth century cards. This is a very attractive and substantial collection representing nine complete sets of classic nineteenth century tobacco card issues. Total: 9 sets, 423 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
