1961 The Hustler Near-Complete Lobby-Card Set (7)
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $120
Near-complete set of seven lobby cards from the 1961 Twentieth Century-Fox release The Hustler. The film, which starred Jackie Gleason as pool champ "Minnesota Fats" and Paul Newman as hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson, was both a critical and box-office success and garnered nine Academy Award nominations, winning two (for Best Art Direction Black-and-White and Best Cinematography Black-and-White). Newman later reprised the role of Fast Eddie in the 1986 film The Color of Money, with his performance in that film earning him his one and only Oscar. For movie-poster collectors, the lobby cards from this film have always been the prize, for the set features the only paper from the film picturing Gleason and Newman together in the poolroom. This lot includes one of those two cards and is missing only card #2 (picturing the pair lagging for the break) for completion. All of the cards display pinholes, while two show slight bleed-through from marker writing on the reverse. Additional flaws for some of the cards include corner chips, edge tears, and minor surface paper loss in the border. Conditions range from Vg to Ex, averaging Vg-Ex. Total: 7 cards. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $120
