Circa 1910 T218 Mecca "Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters" PSA-Graded Collection (68) Including 50 Boxers!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,800

Exceptional collection fifty-four different (plus fourteen duplicates) T218 "Athletes and Prize Fighters" issued with Hassan and Mecca tobacco products, highlighted by fifty desirable boxing subjects. Fifty-seven of the cards are professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. Collectors are well aware of the many baseball sets of the 1910 era, but several very substantial high-quality sets featuring other athletes were also issued by tobacco companies. The largest and most substantial of these sets is the T218 Mecca "Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters" set. The T218 series features sixty-six boxers and eighty-seven other champion athletes of the era, including aviators, bowlers, billiards champions, golfers, and track-and-field stars, for a total of 153 cards. The offered collection represents 44% of a complete set. PSA Grading Composite: One NM-MT 8: Crowley (OC). Three NM 7: O'Brien, O'Keefe, and M. Sullivan (MC). Twenty-three EX-MT 6: Attell, Brannigan, Cross, Donahoe, Driscoll, Ewry, Gans, Gardiner, three Goodman, Griffin, Jeffries, Kaufman, Ketchell, Keyes, two Langford, Manley, Mellody, Nitchie, M. Sullivan, and Weston. Sixteen EX 5: Burke, Cross, Donahoe, Dunbar, Gardiner, Kaufman, Ketchell, Keyes, two Lewis (both MC), McFarland, McGovern, Papke, two Walsh, and Williams. Thirteen VG-EX 4: Burke, Conley, Coulon, Delmont, Deshler, Gardner, Hobens, Hyland, Johns, Lunghi, Marto, Stewart, and Summers/seated (MK). One VG 3: Summers/standing. Ungraded Cards: Gilles, Goodman, Hamilton, Johansson, Kiviat, McEntee, two Sedley, Sellen, Smith, and J. Sullivan. Condition of these ungraded cards is Ex overall, with two Vg and one trimmed. Compared to baseball cards of the era, the T218 set (which is at least as scarce) represents a particularly outstanding value. This is an extremely attractive collection of one of the most classic tobacco sport issues from the early twentieth century. Total: 68 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,800
