Circa 1919 Babe Ruth "Play Ball" Composition Notebook
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $960
In "the olden days," notebooks with stars such as Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb on their covers were very popular with youngsters at school. Offered here is an early example, titled "Play Ball," featuring Babe Ruth as a member of the Boston Red Sox. Ruth is pictured warming up on the sidelines, with his name printed directly below his image. Featured beneath the larger Ruth photo are portrait images of Eddie Cicotte, Eddie Collins, and Slim Sallee. Given the players featured here, it seems almost certain that this notebook was produced shortly after the 1919 season. Ruth, who made the transition from pitcher to outfielder in 1919, hit a then-record 29 home runs that season. Collins and Cicotte were two of the top stars on the pennant-winning Chicago White Sox, while Sallee was the top pitcher for the World Champion Cincinnati Reds. Unfortunately, Cicotte's fame would be short lived. Just two years later he was banned from baseball for his involvement in the 1919 Black Sox scandal, in which he and seven of his teammates conspired to "throw" the World Series. The notebook (8 x 9.75 inches), which contains fifteen lined sheets of paper, displays minor surface wear and is in Excellent condition overall. This is an outstanding example of this popular baseball notebook and one that is perfect for display. Reserve $100. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $960
