Circa 1915 "Fad-A-Way" Candy Container

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $1,680

This vintage circa 1910 candy box bears no exterior markings or labels but the interior lid features a colorful illustration of a baseball pitcher alongside text that tells customers "Signal for Fad-A-Way Ball Gum And Your Troubles Are Due For A Strike Out." While not identified as Mathewson, the image of the pitcher featured on the label is clearly based on Mathewson, who in fact was well known for his trademark "fade-a-way" pitch. It is very likely that the manufacturer intentionally used only the suggestion of Mathewson's endorsement so as to not be obligated to pay money for Matty's approval. Produced by the American Chicle Co., the interior compartment includes a glass cover that remains hinged to the front panel. The interior label remains in Excellent condition. The cardboard box (7.5 x 4.75 x 2 inches) displays general wear, including a small amount of paper loss to one of the side flaps, and a few minor chips and creases. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $100. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $1,680
