1911 E94 George Close Candy Ty Cobb SGC EX 60 - Purple Background
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $13,200
Graded EX 60 by SGC. One of only three examples graded at this level with just two higher out of forty-two cards evaluated by SGC to date. Extraordinary E94 example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb in extremely high grade. This is an outstanding example, with just a hint of light wear at the corners, centering slightly to the left, and a brilliant image set against a deep purple background (one of the seven different background color variations of the set and thought by many to be the scarcest). Very light toning is present in the left border (not at all distracting and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). The back has the checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Mass. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is a superb example of the legendary Ty Cobb from this extremely scarce and classic 1910-era candy issue. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $13,200
