1911 E94 George Close Candy Honus Wagner SGC EX 60 - Red Background - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,600
Graded EX 60 by SGC. One of only five graded at this level by SGC, with none graded higher! Extraordinary E94 example of Hall of Famer "Hans" Wagner in extremely high grade. This is a gem of a card, perfectly clean front and back, with four square corners and a brilliant image set against a bright red background (one of the seven different background color variations of the set). Centered slightly to the left, with perfectly full borders. The back has the checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusettes. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is the highest-graded example ever of an E94 Wagner evaluated by SGC (PSA has not graded an example higher than EX either). This is an exceptionally strong example of the legendary Honus Wagner from this extremely scarce and classic 1910-era candy issue. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $9,600
