1960s Roberto Clemente Single-Signed Ball (Sweet Spot)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
Official National League (Giles) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente in black fountain across the sweet spot. It must be noted that Clemente's signature has been enhanced, but otherwise grades "8/9." The signature enhancement notwithstanding, this ball is notable for the rare sweet-spot signature. For reasons unknown, Clemente almost always chose a side panel when signing a baseball, making a ball such as this a rare exception and one that has always been highly prized by single-signed ball collectors. Of course, all Clemente single-signed balls are rare because of his tragic death in 1972 at the age of thirty-eight. Ideally, the ball dates to the 1963-1969 manufacturing period, a span during which Clemente won three of his four batting titles and his only MVP Award. The ball has been coated with a heavy layer of protective shellac, which displays a few minor chips; otherwise it is in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $540
