1944 Joe Gordon Signed Photo
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $240
Black-and-white photo of Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Gordon, flawlessly inscribed in purple ink (grading "10"), "Best Wishes/to Beatrice/Joe Gordon." Printed along the bottom white border, in the same purple ink, is the date "7-25-44." A stamp on the reverse reads "Compliments of Hawaii Baseball League." Gordon is pictured in uniform, kneeling in the on-deck circle with a bat in his hand. Gordon spent two years (1944 and 1945) as a pilot in the Army Air Force during World War II, during which time he was stationed mainly in Hawaii and San Diego. This photo pictures him as a member of the Seventh Air Force baseball team, which was considered the best club in the service at the time. Gordon starred with both the Yankees and Indians during his eleven-year career (1938-1950). A nine-time All-Star, Gordon was named the American League MVP in 1942 and played on five World Championship clubs (four with the Yankees and one with the Indians). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2009. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays a few light surface wrinkles (most are only visible when viewed at certain angles) and paper residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. Excellent condition overall.
