1911 E94 George Close Candy Cy Young (Lionel Carter Collection)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,680
Extremely attractive example of Cleveland Naps Hall of Famer Cy Young from the E94 George Close Candy set, one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. Graded GOOD 30 by SGC (with a Lionel Carter Collection pedigree), the card is extremely presentable with only minor technical flaws, including light creasing and natural rounding to the corners, responsible for the modest assigned grade. The image of Young is set against a brilliant red background. The reverse is clean and features a checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is a very presentable and relatively affordable example of the legendary Cy Young from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue, and one that would be an outstanding addition to any “E” card, Hall of Famer, Cy Young, or classic prewar-card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,680
