1910-Era John Titus Tobacco-Card Collection (56) Including Thirteen T206s!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,280

Fascinating newly discovered collection of fifty-six 1910-era tobacco cards and pins, each featuring Philadelphia Phillies outfielder John Titus. This collection was recently unearthed in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, not far from Titus' home in St. Clair, where he was born in 1876 and died in 1943. While Titus was never a Hall of Fame-caliber player, he had a respectable ten-year career with the Phillies and Boston Braves, amassing more than 1401 hits and 561 RBI. In the card-collecting world, Titus holds the distinction as the only player depicted with a mustache in the entire 524-card T206 White Border set, the most popular and widely collected set of the era. This collection consists of the following: 1) Thirteen 1910-1911 P2 Sweet Caporal Pins. All are intact with paper ad on the reverse. Overall condition is Ex or better, with three showing more advanced age spotting. 2) One 1910 S74 Silk. Excellent, with fraying along the top and bottom. 3) Fifteen 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders. Overall condition is Gd to Vg, with three lesser. 4) One 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folder end panel. Represents one-third of a complete card. Grades Gd. 5) Thirteen 1911 T205 Gold Borders. Six Piedmont, three Polar Bear, two Honest Long Cut, one Hassan, and one American Beauty. Condition is five Vg, six Fr/Gd, and two lesser. 6) Thirteen 1909-1911 T206 White Borders. Ten Piedmont, two Sweet Caporal, and one Old Mill. Condition is two Vg, eight Fr/Gd, and three lesser. This is an extremely unusual and very interesting collection of 1910-era tobacco cards! Total: 56 items. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,280
