1967 Wacky Package Die-Cut Near-Complete Master Set PSA-Graded (53/56)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $11,400

Addendum: This near-complete set consists of 53 out of the 56 cards in a set, not 60 as originally stated. Thank you to collector Dan McKee for bringing this to our attention.

Extraordinary ultra high-grade near-complete master set of 1967 Wacky Packages consisting of 53 different of the 56 die-cuts (including all number variations) in the set, entirely graded and encapsulated by PSA. The 1967 set was the very first of all Wacky Pack sets, and therefore of great historical significance to both the Topps Gum Company and American popular culture. This is without question one of the finest original 1967 Wacky Packages sets in existence! There were originally forty-four titles in the Wacky Packages set, each numbered on the back. Due to cease-and-desist letters sent to Topps, several titles were pulled and replaced on the printing sheets by duplicates of other titles, thus creating rarities and numbering variations. This near-complete master-set is missing only three variations, two of which are early-withdrawn extreme rarities, for completion: #21b Jolly Mean Giant, 32a Ratz Crackers, and 38a Cracked Animals (offered as a separate lot in this auction).

The die-cut series was the first series of Wacky Packages released in 1967. The success of this set, designed with perforations on card stock with gummed glue on the reverse, predated the sticker format that is most closely associated with Wacky Packs, but these were the first. This is the set that kicked off the Wacky Pack craze! When Wacky Packs were issued in the late 1960s, kids went wild. Whether it was the times, as youngsters became more conscious of the manipulations of Madison Avenue, or the amusing irreverence of the artwork, the set struck a chord with the youth of America, which continues to this day. In the world of Wacky Packs, this first set is both rare and historically significant.

Wacky Pack die-cuts were often punched out, as intended, or separated from their backgrounds due to handling and the susceptibility of their perforated die-cut design. All of the Wacky Pack die-cuts in this set are complete and intact as issued. This is a very sharp-looking, carefully assembled, ultra high-grade master set (minus three cards) of one of the 1960's most popular nonsport issues. Total: 53 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+.
