1938 R69 Gum, Inc. “Horrors of War” Near-Complete Low-Number Set (222/240) Plus 13 High Numbers and Original Wax Wrapper
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,080
Exceptionally attractive near complete low-number set of "Horrors of War" consisting of 222 cards (out of 240). Missing the following eighteen cards for completion: #204, 213, 217, 218, 220, 221, 222, 223, 227, 228, 232, 234, 235, 236, 237, 238, 239, and 240. Also included are thirteen cards from the rare high-number series (#241-288) for a total of 235 different cards (out of 288 in a complete set) along with an original wax wrapper. Gum, Inc.'s "Horrors of War" is perhaps the single most famous non-sport card set ever issued. The sensational graphics and the politically charged descriptions on their reverses also made this series perhaps the most controversial set ever issued. Looking over these cards, and realizing that the scenes depicted were not ancient history but then-current world events unfolding at the time, it is almost inconceivable that these cards were actually issued to youngsters with bubble gum. Death, destruction, and bloodshed characterize the artwork of the set. Youngsters went wild. Parents went wilder. The set's place in the history of card collecting is forever secure. "Horrors of War" was originally planned to be 240 cards, and was even sold in 240-card set form. Later forty-eight high-number cards (#241-288) were added to the set. The high-number series cards are particularly rare. Condition: Low-Numbers (#1-192): 56% Vg to Vg-Ex, 10% Gd, and 34% lesser (including some trimmed/irregularly cut and thirty-eight cards which appear to be Gum, Inc. file-copy cards as evidenced by heavy glue residue on either the front or back of the cards, where they were pasted into an album for the company's records). Semi-High Numbers (#193-240): Thirty included. Eleven grade Vg to Vg-Ex, seven grade Gd, and twelve grade lesser (eight of these cards appear to be Gum, Inc. file-copy cards). High-Numbers (#241-288): Thirteen included (#241, 242, 243, 245, 247, 248, 250, 252, 253, 259, 260, 276, and 285). Condition is ten Vg to Vg-Ex, with three Pr to Gd. The accompanying wax wrapper (green variation) has been flattened and displays normal fold lines and a few small tears at the edges. Otherwise Excellent. This is a very attractive near-complete low-number set (#1-240) missing just eighteen cards for completion and accompanied by thirteen of the rare high-numbers. This near set is ideal as a foundation for the assembly of a complete set, or for the collector who has a serious interest in the classic "Horrors of War" set and would like to acquire the lion's share of the set without spending a fortune. Total: 235 cards and one wax wrapper. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,080
