1933 R113 Orbit Gum Co. "Popeye Comics" Complete Set (30)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $840
Presented is a very rare and desirable complete set of R113 "Popeye Comics" issued by the Orbit Gum Co. in 1933. Each of these booklets (2 x 2.5 inches), which features "Popeye the Sailor Man" in a number of different adventures, folds out lengthwise to reveal cartoons on one side, and a black-and-white game on the other. Almost all of the booklets grade Vg-Ex to Ex, with eight Vg and one lesser due to staple holes. This is one of the all-time classic 1930s nonsport sets. In addition, this set naturally has a great crossover appeal to both comic and character collectors. These somewhat fragile booklets are naturally very susceptible to damage, making the assembly of high-grade sets a significant challenge for collectors. Most examples in the offered set have been downgraded due to very slight technical concerns, such as a very light crease or tiny tear. Each booklet is crisp and clean. The "Popeye Comics" booklets are among the most desirable of all 1930s nonsport issues. This is a very attractive and very rarely seen set of this condition-sensitive issue, and this is the first complete set of this rare 1930s bubble-gum issue that we have ever offered. Total: 30 booklets. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $840
