1935 R89 Gum, Inc. "Mickey Mouse" Bubble Gum Near-Complete Set (93/96) Plus Wrapper

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,800

Near-complete set of the classic 1935 "Mickey Mouse" Bubble Gum cards issued by Gum., Inc., consisting of ninety-three (of ninety-six) cards plus an original wax wrapper. Missing only #74, 82, and 85 for completion. Also included are five duplicates (#6, 15, 19, 20, and 26). Mickey Mouse Bubble Gum cards are considered by many to be the single most classic 1930s nonsport bubble-gum card set. The brilliant colors, high-quality artwork, and popular subject matter have always made this set a favorite with collectors. It is also worth noting that cards from this set are much scarcer than most collectors realize, and far more difficult to find than most baseball cards of the era (such as Goudeys, National Chicles, Play Balls, etc.). The offered near-complete set is extremely attractive, presenting as Excellent to Near Mint overall, with bright colors and strong corners throughout. Mild toning is present along some of the edges, as is common with this issue. We must, however, note that we selected a dozen cards from this set that appeared to be Near Mint and submitted them to SGC for grading and encapsulation. After performing their grading inspection, SGC deemed that all twelve cards had been neatly cut from a sheet and therefore the edges did not display characteristics consistent with factory-cutting (and therefore would not grade numerically by SGC). Upon learning of this, we evaluated the balance of the cards and found similar traits which lead us to believe that most, if not all, of these cards are carefully cut from sheets and may not receive a numerical grade if submitted for professional grading. Despite this, the set remains in outstanding condition, with an appearance (as can easily be seen) far better than is normally encountered for this issue, and in appearance (without reference to numerical grading) is easily one of the finest sets of this popular issue we've ever handled. Our consignor purchased these cards in the early 1990s, in the days prior to the rise of professional grading, advertised as Near Mint. While grading standards have changed since the early 1990s, it is easy to see why they were graded at this level at that time, and appreciated by our consignor as Near Mint to this day. The original wax wrapper which accompanies this set is bright and crisp, with several bold illustrations of Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters, and is in Excellent condition. This is a very attractive near-complete set of one of the most popular of all 1930s gum-card sets, with tremendous crossover appeal to both card collectors and Mickey Mouse collectors, and one that perhaps presents an exceptional and rare opportunity to acquire a near-complete set at a relatively affordable level due to the evidence of sheet-cutting that exists on many of the cards. Total: 98 cards (93 different plus 5 duplicates) and one wax wrapper. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,800
