1930s R109 Gum, Inc. "Pirate's Picture" Complete Set (72): #2 PSA Set Registry! Plus Wrapper and Three Tokens

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $6,000

Presented is a 72-card complete set of R109 "Pirate's Picture" cards issued by Gum, Inc. Also included is an original wax wrapper and three collector's tokens. This entire set is graded by PSA and currently ranks second on the PSA Set Registry with an overall GPA of 4.27. The R109 set was one of the great gum-card sets produced during the 1930s and features colorful illustrations of pirate-related scenes along with narratives on the reverse about the pirates and their adventures. Three cards (#9, 34, and 59) are short-printed and make completion of this set especially challenging. PSA Condition Composite: EX-MT 6 (1 card): #12. EX 5 (28 cards): #4, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 22, 27, 28, 29, 31, 36, 38, 41, 42, 44, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 61, 63, 64, 66, 68, and 70. VG-EX+ 4.5 (5 cards): #7, 19, 24, 32, and 40. VG-EX 4 (26 cards): #1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 13, 18, 21, 23, 25, 33, 39, 43, 46, 47, 48, 54, 55, 56, 57, 60, 62, 67, and 69. VG+ 3.5 (4 cards): #45, 58, 65, and 72. VG 3 (6 cards): #26, 30, 35, 37, 59, and 71. GOOD 2 (1 card): #9. PR 1 (1 card): #34. The accompanying wrapper displays crisp, pirate-themed illustrations in bold color. It has been flattened and displays wrinkling. The three tokens, marked "Double Doubloons," measure approximately .75 inches in diameter and feature a pirate head on the front. One was included with each piece of Pirate Picture Bubble Gum as noted on the reverse. These tokens are especially scarce and, like the wrapper, are an ideal accompaniment to any complete set. This is an extremely attractive, and relatively high grade, complete set of this classic 1930s issue, accompanied by four outstanding companion pieces, that would be a significant addition to any nonsport-card collection. Total: 72 cards, one wrapper, and three tokens. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $6,000
