1889 N165 Goodwin "Games and Sports Series" Near-Complete SGC-Graded Set (45/50)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,160

Near-complete set of forty-five different (out of fifty) 1889 N165 Goodwin & Co. "Games and Sport Series" cards, entirely graded by SGC (submitted by REA). Issued by Goodwin & Company, one card was inserted with each package of Old Judge cigarettes. One of the few pre-1900 full-color sports-related tobacco sets, this set features generic ballplayer scenes with portraits of women ballplayers in the foreground and is all the more distinctive in that the illustrations are not comical. The cards each measure approximately 1-1/2 x 2-3/4 inches and a checklist for the entire set appears on the reverse. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the American Tobacco Cards Price Guide checklist. SGC Grading Composite: EX/NM 80 (4 cards): #25, 29, 35, and 39. EX 60 (7 cards): #8, 14, 18, 19, 24, 49, and 50. VG/EX+ 55 (5 cards): #17, 21, 38, 40, and 45. VG/EX 50 (1 card): #1. VG+ 45 (7 cards): #7, 10, 22, 30, 32, 37, and 47. VG 40 (3 cards): #4, 31, and 41. GOOD+ 35 (4 cards): #11, 12, 15, and 36. GOOD 30 (2 cards): #20 and 34. FAIR 20 (9 cards): #2, 5, 9, 13, 16, 23, 28, 33, and 43. Authentic (3 cards): #26, 27, and 44. Missing only #3, 6, 34, 42, and 46. All cards are bright and crisp, with many of the lower-graded cards downgraded solely due to technical flaws on the reverse, such as glue residue or small areas of paper loss. This is a very attractive near-complete set of this popular nineteenth-century issue. Total: 45 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,160
