1888 N2 Allen & Ginter American Indian Chiefs Complete SGC-Graded Set (50)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,200

Complete set of all fifty 1888 N2 Allen & Ginter American Indian Chiefs cards, entirely graded by SGC (submitted by REA). Issued by the Allen & Ginter Tobacco Company, one card was inserted with each package of Allen & Ginter cigarettes. One of the most popular of all ninteenth-century nonsport issues, this colorful set features many of the most legendary American Indian chiefs. Included are Geronimo, Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph, and many more. It is fascinating to note that the great Indian chiefs featured were not ancient historical figures when the set came out, but then-current legends, and most (maybe all) were still alive when this set was issued. The cards each measure approximately 1-1/2 x 2-3/4 inches and a checklist for the entire set appears on the reverse. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the American Tobacco Cards Price Guide checklist. SGC Grading Composite: NM/MT 88 (1 card): #10. NM+ 86 (2 cards): #5 and 38. NM 84 (9 cards): #7, 9, 17, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, and 28. EX/NM+ 82 (7 cards): #13, 14, 16, 30, 39, 43, and 50. EX/NM 80 (5 cards): #3, 18, 25, 40, and 44. EX+ 70 (4 cards): #2, 19, 31, and 37. EX 60 (5 cards): #4, 23, 24, 47, and 49. VG/EX+ 55 (2 cards): #36 and 46. VG/EX 50 (1 card): #8. VG+ 45 (9 cards): #6, 12, 15, 32, 33, 34, 42, 45, and 48. VG 40 (2 cards): #11 and 29. GOOD+ 35 (1 card): #41. GOOD 30 (1 card): #1. POOR 10 (1 card): #35. This is one of the premier sets featuring Indians, which has always been a popular area of collecting. Complete sets of this issue are hard to find. In fact, this is only the third complete set we have ever offered! It is, we should note, also the finest of those three sets, with two-thirds of the set grading Excellent or better. All cards are bright and crisp, with the few modestly graded cards downgraded solely due to minor technical flaws, mostly on the reverse. This is an exceptional, high-quality complete set of this classic issue that would be a highlight in any advanced nonsport-card collection! Total: 50 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
