1887 N89 Duke "Tinted Photos” Near-Complete Set (38/50)

Near-complete set consisting of thirty-eight different (out of fifty) 1887 N89 Duke "Tinted Photos." This set was issued in two distinct formats: as traditional tobacco cards (approximately 1-7/16 x 2-3/4 inches) and as smaller die-cuts varying in size. The offered near-complete set features cards in both formats (seventeen die-cuts and twenty-one regular). Each format features a colorized female portrait on front and an advertisement for Duke's Cigarettes on the reverse; the regular-size cards also feature an advertisement on front underneath the image. Condition of the die-cuts is Excellent overall, with two lesser. The regular cards present as Vg-Ex to Ex overall, with two lesser, but all display traces of added color at the corners or along the black borders. This is a very attractive near-complete set of this fascinating and rarely seen nineteenth-century nonsport issue. Total: 38 cards. Reserve $100. Estimate $200+. SOLD FOR $420
