1949 The Three Stooges Malice In The Palace Partial Lobby Card Set (3) Including Curly Cameo in One of the Scene Cards!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320

Partial set of three (out of four) different lobby cards, including the highly desirable title card, from the 1949 Three Stooges short Malice In The Palace. (The studios normally issued only four lobby cards for shorts and lower-budget films instead of the standard eight.) Also included in this collection is the only lobby card ever issued featuring all four Three Stooges: Curly, Moe, Larry, and Shemp. Curly suffered a series of debilitating strokes starting in 1946 that effectively ended his career. However, he did make a cameo in the 1947 Three Stooges short Hold That Lion! A similar cameo was scheduled for Malice in the Palace, as evidenced by this scene card picturing Curly as a chef who threatens Moe, Larry, and Shemp with a cleaver. Curly, who is noticeably thinner due to his recent health problems, looks nothing like his former Stooges character, especially since his hair has grown back and he is wearing a chef's cap and a fake handlebar mustache. Unfortunately, Curly's scene in the film was eventually cut, so fans never got the chance to see the four together on screen in this film. He never worked on another film. All Three Stooges lobby cards are rare, even those dating from the later years (1947 to 1956). Interestingly, we have seen fewer Stooges lobby cards at auction from that later period than we have from the 1934-1946 span. Auction listings featuring more than one Three Stooges lobby card are seldom seen. The cards (14 x 11 inches) all display varying degrees of restoration in repair of tack holes and/or minor edge tears. The title card displays a lightly embossed proprietary stamp in the lower right corner, minor creasing and the stamp of a former owner on the reverse that was once covered by tape (the tape has been removed, but an adhesive stain remains). The scene card with Curly displays numerous pinholes and staple holes around the border (not restored). The other scene card also displays a few staple holes along the borders (not restored), as well as a few minor stains. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Total: 3 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,320
