1938 The Three Stooges Termites of 1938 One-Sheet Linen-Backed Movie Poster

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $27,000

One-sheet movie poster issued for the 1938 Three Stooges short Termites of 1938. Very little paper from this film has survived; the only other item we have seen at auction was a lobby card, which sold for $4,600 in 2005. This was the Stooges" twenty-eighth short for Columbia and the title was a parody of the film Goldiggers of 1937. The plot involved the boys working as exterminators who are mistakenly hired as escorts for a high-society affair, with predictable results. Three Stooges one-sheets dating from the team's "golden age" (1934-1947; those featuring Curly as part of the trio) are not only the most desirable of all paper from their films, but also the rarest. Prior to this extraordinary offering by REA (held over the course of three auctions), we have seen fewer than twenty different-titled Three Stooges one-sheets from this early era offered at public auction in the past fifteen years. To put that number in proper perspective, it should be noted that the Stooges starred in ninety-seven shorts during that fourteen-year period. The poster (28.5 x 41 inches) is linen-backed and has benefitted from professional restoration, including repairs to a number of tack holes, small tears along both the fold lines and border areas, and a few minor color touchups. Excellent to Mint in appearance. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $27,000
