1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel Rarity: Mike Mitchell, Cincinnati

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,920

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Only three examples grade higher out of twenty-eight cards evaluated by SGC to date. One of the legendary rarities of candy cards, from the E90-1 American Caramel series, Mitchell, Cincinnati, has long been recognized as one of the key rarities of the E90-1 American Caramel candy-card series, and in the early days of organized collecting was often referred to by collectors as the "Honus Wagner of E cards." This is an outstanding example, with a bright yellow background, even wear to the corners (slightly more in the upper right), full borders, a few stray marks along the left edge, and near-perfect centering. This is a very strong example of this legendary key rarity from the most popular caramel-card set of the era. Today collectors recognize many cards as being of various degrees of rarity in the E90-1 set, but Mitchell, Cincinnati (along with the Joe Jackson rookie card, also from the same set), will always be the most famous key rarity of the classic E90-1 American Caramel set. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
