Pair of Muhammad Ali Rare Large-Signature Displays

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,800

Two identical large-format display pieces, each featuring an enormous Muhammad Ali signature example, professionally matted together with an additional Ali handwritten "saying" and a unique photo of Ali taken by noted photographer John Stewart that was produced specifically to illustrate the sentiments expressed by Ali in the writing. All of these signature examples and photographs originate from an unspecified 1977 promotional project that never came to fruition (see our extended website description for the complete history of these pieces). These are, naturally, two extraordinary Muhammad Ali signature displays, each of which blurs the distinction between autograph collecting and art in a very unusual manner. Both displays feature the word "Peace" together with a large signature example (one measures 13.5 inches in length; the other, 12.5 inches) and a black-and-white (7.5 x 9.5 inches) photo of Ali holding a dove (the photo was printed by our consignor from the original negative). All of the signatures and writing are boldly scripted and grade "9/10." On one of the displays, both the "Peace" sheet and the signature sheet have a vertical line of tiny perforations (original to the sheet) that touch upon, respectively, the first letter in "Peace" and the first letter in "Muhammad." Except for that minor anomaly, all of the sheets are in Excellent condition overall. The photos are both in apparent Mint condition. Each matted display piece measures 24 x 20 inches. Total: 2 signed displays. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,800
