Muhammad Ali Rare Large-Signature Display Piece
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,600
This large-format Muhammad Ali display piece is comprised of an enormous Muhammad Ali signature example, professionally matted together with an additional Ali handwritten "saying" and a unique photo of Ali taken by noted photographer John Stewart that was produced specifically to illustrate the sentiments expressed by Ali in the writing. Both the signature example and photograph originate from an unspecified 1977 promotional project that never came to fruition (see our extended website description for the complete history of this piece). This is, naturally, an extraordinary Muhammad Ali signature display and one that blurs the distinction between autograph collecting and art in a very unusual manner. The display features Ali's most famous mantra, "Float like a butterfly, Sting like a bee" (measuring 29 inches in length), matted together with an amazing fourteen-inch signature example and a black-and-white photo (8 x 10 inches) of Ali holding a butterfly and bee. (The photo was produced by our consignor from the original negative.) Both the text and signature are boldly scripted in black marker, grading "9/10." Each sheet displays a few minor creases and there are a few edge tears on the "saying" sheet. The photo is in apparent Mint condition. In Excellent condition overall. Total dimensions: 36 x 24 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,600
