1964 Rocky Marciano Signed Check - Signed "Rocco Marchegiano"
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $600
Check, dated October 26, 1964, signed by former heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano. The check, drawn on the American National Bank & Trust Co., of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is made out to “Russel Thompson” in the amount of $140 and has been signed “Rocco Marchegiano” in blue ink (grading “8/9”) along the base. (Rocco Marchegiano was Marciano's real name.) Rocky Marciano is the only heavyweight-boxing champion in history to retire undefeated. Unfortunately, his untimely death in 1969, one day before his forty-sixth birthday, has resulted in the scarcity of his signature examples today. The very few checks from the Marciano estate that have surfaced in recent years have quickly disappeared into collections and are not readily available in the marketplace. The check (5.75 x 2.5 inches; visible dimensions) displays a standard bank cancellation stamp and is otherwise in apparent Near Mint condition. Matted together with an original cartoon artwork (14.75 x 12 inches) of Marciano and a modern Marciano trade card (4.5 x 5.75 inches) to total dimensions of 19 x 22 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $600
