Muhammad Ali Signed 8 x 10 Photo Collection (20)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,400
Collection of twenty 8 x 10-inch color photographs, each beautifully signed by Muhammad Ali in blue Sharpie. All of the signatures have been boldly executed and grade "9" or "10." Ten of the photos offered here picture the famous image of Ali triumphantly standing over Sonny Liston after knocking him out in the first round of their epic rematch on May 25, 1965, in Lewiston, Maine. That image, taken by noted sports photographer Neil Leifer, is considered by many to be the greatest photographic image in sports history. In a later interview, Leifer offered his opinion as to why this photo has stood the test of time: "This image represents the way people want to remember Ali: strength, confidence and braggadocio." The remaining ten photos picture a close-up image of Ali smiling for the cameras, either before or after a fight. It should be noted that all of the these signatures were personally obtained by our consignor at the 1988 "Cincinnati Classic," which was held at the Music Hall in Cincinnati, Ohio. The "Cincinnati Classic," a large, five-day sports-collectors convention, was one of the primary attractions of the city's celebratory "All-Star" weekend in 1988. (The 1988 Major League All-Star Game was held in Cincinnati that year.) Muhammad Ali was one of the twenty-seven celebrity signers at the show, along with Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and many other Hall of Fame baseball players. This is an exceptional collection of Muhammad Ali signed photos that has been carefully stored and has literally not seen the light of day since the signing in 1988. Total: 20 photos. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $8,400
